HYMNS FOR THE SORTA-COMMITTED, OR, ONWARD CHRISTIAN RESERVISTS

275.

Huh. Glad I noticed that I typed "hymens" instead of "hymns" in that title the first go 'roundalthough sort-committed hymens makes some sense too. Hee.

So yeah okay my previous entry says I'm moving to another blog site, but what can I say? You people WHINE and I didn't realize that so many of you read my blog every day, so here I am posting again after all. Please forgive me for my mgratory tendencies!

In between work deadlines today I read a tribute to Muhammed Ali that included his famous quote about refusing to serve in Vietnam:
Why should they ask me to put on a uniform and go 10,000 miles from home and drop bombs and bullets on brown people in Vietnam while so-called Negro people in Louisville are treated like dogs and denied simple human rights? No, I'm not going 10,000 miles from home to help murder and burn another poor nation simply to continue the domination of white slave masters of the darker people the world over. This is the day when such evils must come to an end. I have been warned that to take such a stand would cost me millions of dollars. But I have said it once and I will say it again. The real enemy of my people is here. I will not disgrace my religion, my people or myself by becoming a tool to enslave those who are fighting for their own justice, freedom and equality... If I thought the war was going to bring freedom and equality to 22 million of my people, they wouldn't have to draft me, I'd join tomorrow. I have nothing to lose by standing up for my beliefs. So I'll go to jail, so what? We've been in jail for 400 years.

The writer also noted that an older woman of African descent held up a sign at a recent anti-war rally that that read "No Iraqi ever left me to die on a roof a clear reference to Alis "No Vietnamese ever called me 'nigger.'"

So I wonder if John Edwards really has stumbled upon an issue that will weaken the Republican Party and was fortunate enough (well) to have a hurricane showcase his cause. Our television screens were filled with visual evidence of how 37 million impoverished Americans live while our president gives tax cuts to the rich and we sit on our asses watching the elite as if their riches were somehow entertainment.

Seems Americans are suddenly aware of poverty again and embarrassed by the fact that our government cannot (or won't) take care of its own citizens (or should I say that our government stalks the poor in order to reward the wealthy in a kind of soul-sucking reverse Robin Hoodism?). And they don't much like other nations seeing how neglectful we have become.

Baptist hymns have been whispering in my skull today after I attended a funeral yesterday, so I am pasting some new hymn titles below. (I didn't write them, but the person who forwarded them to me did not include an author.) Sad that so many of us are this disillusioned, when you think about it, but these will be funny to folks who grew up with the Broadman hymnal.

HYMNS FOR THE SORTA-COMMITTED > I Surrender Some There Shall Be Sprinkles of Blessings Fill My Spoon, Lord He's Quite a Bit to Me I Sorta Like to Tell the Story Take My Life and Let Me Be It is My Secret What God Can Do There are Scattered Clouds in My Soul Today Onward Christian Reservists Where He Leads Me, I Will Consider Following Just as I Pretend to Be When the Saints Go Sneaking In My Hope is Built On Somewhat Less It Is Fairl to Middlin' With My Soul

LISTENING TO: A voice mail message from a colleague

READING: Jeanette Wintersons Lighthousekeeping

SANG IN SHOWER: Fill My Cup Lord (yea, its from going to that damn funeral yesterday)

BEST OF SPAM: Be the "biggest" of all of your friends! (Oh is that the dildo you want me to use tonight dear?)
